History

In geographical and historical terms, Niederösterreich can be divided into four districts:

The Waldviertel (forest district) in the north-west
The Weinviertel (wine district) in the north-east
The Mostviertel (cider district) in the south-west
The Industrieviertel (industry district) in the south-east

Even if these traditional descriptions are no longer relevant to the same extent as when they were first coined they do still provide an indication of the specific features of the particular regions and we shall use them here as a guide for our tour through Niederösterreich. To complete the picture, it is worth noting that the region around St Pölten is also described as the central area of Niederösterreich (NÖ-Mitte).
